The correct answer is ‘Equals’.
Recorde introduced the equals symbol in the book ‘Whetstone of Witte’ in 1557, seven years before Shakespeare was born. As a shorthand he replaced the words ‘is equal to’ with two parallel lines, because “No two things can be more equal”.
